The dance of Enyomo

The dance of Enyomo
Near Makao, Northern Congo, 1999
Five years had passed since my earlier photos of pygmies, and I was trying to find the clan I had photographed before. They seemed to be all gone, and I ended up deep in the forest with a new group. Louis Sarno was with me as a translator, and we came to celebrate and document the music and spirits that were disappearing with each new wave of outside influence.

Enyomo is a thieving spirit, encircled and taunted by yodeling dancing women. These women were the wives of several of the men that would walk with Mike Fay for the first eight months on the Megatransect.
