In 1992, while photographing lowland gorillas in Africa, I first encountered J. Michael Fay of the Wildlife Conservation Society. At the time, he was working on the edge of a great wilderness that for us would become the last place on Earth.

To imagine this place, think of an untamed forest where chimpanzees have never seen humans, and where the pygmies’ spirits still dance and sing every night.
