Petit-Loango, Gabon, 2000
I was afraid with the midday sun that I would not find an image that lived up to the moment of reaching the ocean after 15 long months of walking. Mike is not praying, just wiping the salt water from his face. But this illusion, combined with Sofiano’s spontaneous flip of joy, gave me the image that will always represent the climax of this great 21st-century expedition.
