I first photographed these two together several years earlier, when Jane was starting a feeding program for starving animals at a zoo in Pointe Noire, Congo. La Veille would not leave the safety of her cage even though the door stood wide open. Insane from years of abuse, La Veille was moved to the sanctuary that the Jane Goodall Institute set up, where she might recover with contact with young chimps.
